Saving Money By Keeping Your Kitchen Appliances Going For Longer

January 16, 2021 By Leelo 2 Comments

Kitchen appliances don’t come cheap and you could find yourself in a tough financial position if your oven or refrigerator suddenly stops working. You can’t live without these appliances so you will be forced to replace them immediately, regardless of whether you can afford to or not.

But you can avoid that situation and save money if you take steps to look after your appliances and keep them running for longer. This is also a great way to reduce your impact on the environment because appliance waste is such a huge issue. We are so quick to throw things away instead of looking after them and making sure that they don’t break, but if you have this attitude towards your kitchen appliances, you’ll end up spending a lot of money on replacements. But if you adopt these simple habits, you can keep your appliances going for a lot longer.

Clean Filters Regularly

A lot of different appliances have filters on them, like dishwashers or dryers, for example. These filters are there to stop food or dust from clogging the machine up, but they fill up fairly quickly and they can’t do their job properly unless you clean them. Unfortunately, a lot of people neglect this job and so their appliances break down a lot sooner than they otherwise would have done. Neglecting the dust trap on your dryer can also be very dangerous because it increases the risk of fires. The dishwasher, dryer, and cooker hood all have filters that need to be cleaned out on a regular basis. Once you get into the habit of doing it every month or so, you’ll notice that the appliances work better and

Check For Changes In Performance

Any small changes in performance can indicate a problem with your appliances. If you make small repairs right away, your appliance should continue working fine and you won’t need to replace them or make any big, expensive repairs. If you notice that your dryer drum isn’t turning properly, for example, that’s a sign that you need a new dryer belt or something is obstructing the drum. If your dishwasher isn’t cleaning things properly, there might be something wrong with the washer arms inside. People tend to ignore these changes in performance and put it down to natural wear and tear but you should take notice and make repairs right away if you want your appliances to go the distance.

Follow The Usage Guidelines

All appliances come with guidelines about how they should be used and you must follow them. Washing machines or dryers, for example, will have guidelines about how much you should fill them before running them. If you overfill them, you put more strain on the working parts because they were not designed to handle that much weight. Over time, this makes your appliances far more likely to break down and if the damage is extensive, you may not be able to repair it.

Remove Limescale From Appliances That Use Water

Limescale is one of the biggest appliance killers there is, so you need to take steps to tackle it. Any appliance that uses water, but especially those that heat it, is likely to get a buildup of limescale over time.

You can buy descaling solutions to put in your kettle every now and again to get rid of the buildup and you can also buy limescale catchers that help to reduce it in the first place. Alternatively, you can descale a kettle using natural ingredients, like vinegar. There are also special washing machine cleaning solutions that remove limescale from the inner workings of the washing machine. You should use these cleaners on a regular basis if you want to stop limescale from damaging your appliances.

Check Door Seals

The door seals on refrigerators and ovens help to maintain the right temperature. When the seals wear down, the temperature is more likely to fluctuate meaning that the appliance has to work a lot harder to heat up or cool down. All of this extra strain means that the working parts in your appliances will wear out faster, so they won’t last as long. The thing is, the rubber seals around the doors are not that difficult to replace and they are very cheap to buy, so it’s an easy fix if you want to extend the lifespan of your appliances.

If you want to get serious about your money and do everything you can to make savings, you need to take care of your kitchen appliances and follow these steps to increase their lifespan as much as possible.
